MAPPING FINANCIAL HARDSHIP

ALICE — Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed — households earn more than the Federal Poverty Level, but not enough to afford the basics where they live. Households below the ALICE Threshold (ALICE households and households in poverty) are forced to make tough choices, such as deciding between quality child care or paying the rent — choices that have long-term consequences for their families and communities.

This interactive map shows ALICE data by state, county, Census County Subdivision, Census Place, and ZIP code; and county-level demographic data by household type, age, and race/ethnicity. See legislative district data using the Legislative District Tool. Detailed data is only available for ALICE Partner states. Want to help fill in the map?  Contact us!

Data Notes and Sources

The income data used in this analysis relies on U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) estimates. The ACS is based on a representative sample of housing units and people; therefore, these estimates have a degree of uncertainty. Some data points are one- or five-year averages depending on population size (these are reported in the Data Sheet for each state).
